Location and Getting Around

Where exactly is Villa Maria?
Villa Maria sits in the traditional village of Darmarochori, near Kolymvari, on the west coast of Crete. It is surrounded by olive groves and looks out towards both the sea and the White Mountains.

Kolymvari Beach is about five minutes away, Chania Old Town around twenty-five minutes, and Chania International Airport roughly forty-five minutes. It is also well placed for Balos Lagoon, Falassarna and Elafonissi.
How far is Kolymvari Beach?
About a five-minute drive. Kolymvari is one of the calmer stretches of coast in western Crete, with clear water and a handful of traditional tavernas serving fresh fish.

Because it is so close, you can go for an early swim, spend the afternoon by the sea or drive down for dinner by the water.
How far is Chania Old Town?
Approximately twenty-five minutes by car. Chania is known for its Venetian Harbour, its narrow historic streets and its food, and it is easily a full day out.

The short drive means you can enjoy the city without staying in the middle of it, and come back to quiet in the evening.
How far is Chania Airport?
Around forty-five minutes from Chania International Airport (CHQ). The drive is straightforward, so your holiday starts soon after you land.

Most guests pick up a rental car at the airport, which we recommend.
Are restaurants and supermarkets nearby?
Yes. Kolymvari is a few minutes away and has tavernas, seafood restaurants, cafes, bakeries and supermarkets, along with pharmacies and ATMs.

The area is known for family-run places serving fresh fish and grilled meat, which makes longer stays easy and comfortable.
Is private parking available?
Yes. There is free private on-site parking for guests, so you can come and go without ever looking for a space.
Should I rent a car?
We strongly recommend it. The villa is peaceful and surrounded by countryside, and a car is what turns that into an advantage rather than a limitation.

Within a short drive you can reach Balos Lagoon, Falassarna Beach, Elafonissi Beach, the Botanical Park of Crete and Chania Old Town, along with wineries, olive mills and mountain villages that public transport does not serve.
Which beaches are close to Villa Maria?
Kolymvari Beach is minutes away and is ideal for a quiet swim. For day trips, Balos Lagoon is famous for its turquoise water and white sand, Falassarna is one of the most awarded beaches in Greece, and Elafonissi is known internationally for its pink sand and shallow lagoon.

Several quieter coves along the western coast are also within comfortable driving distance.
What else is there to see nearby?
Chania Old Town and the Venetian Harbour are the obvious starting point, along with traditional villages, local wineries and olive oil mills.

For anyone who prefers being outdoors there is hiking, the Samaria Gorge in season, and boat trips to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island. The region also has beautiful monasteries and archaeological sites.

Booking and Rates

Yes, and it is the best way to book. Choose your dates and submit a request through our booking page. We will confirm availability and send you everything you need to complete the reservation, including our bank details.

Once payment is received your reservation is finalised and your dates are confirmed. Booking directly means no agency fees and no middleman, and you deal with us throughout.
What is the minimum stay?
The minimum stay is five nights. That gives you time to enjoy the villa itself rather than spending your holiday travelling between places.

For current availability and any seasonal conditions, please check the booking page.
What rates are available?
There are two options. The Standard Rate is the flexible choice and allows free cancellation up to 60 days before arrival, which suits travellers whose plans may still change.

The Non-Refundable Rate is 5% cheaper and is our best available price. It is intended for guests with confirmed plans, since the booking cannot be cancelled, modified or refunded once it is made.

Both rates include exactly the same villa, the same amenities and the same service. Full details are on our terms and conditions page.

Planning Your Trip

Why stay in Kolymvari rather than Chania?
Kolymvari offers a different holiday from the centre of Chania. Instead of crowded streets and limited privacy you get a quiet coastal area of olive groves, traditional villages and good beaches, while remaining a short drive from everything the city offers.

It also means easier parking, calmer evenings, and quick access to both the coast and the mountains.
Why choose a villa instead of a hotel?
A private villa gives you space, privacy and freedom that a hotel cannot. Rather than sharing facilities with hundreds of other guests, the entire property belongs to your group for the length of your stay.

You also get multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen and outdoor areas where you can eat, swim and spend time together without interruption, which matters most for families, groups of friends and longer stays.
When is the best time to visit Crete?
It depends on the holiday you want. Spring, from April to June, brings pleasant temperatures, green landscapes and far fewer visitors, which is ideal for sightseeing and hiking.

July and August are the classic beach months, warm and lively. September and October stay warm enough for swimming but are noticeably quieter, which is why they are popular with couples and families who prefer a slower pace.
Why choose Villa Maria?
Villa Maria offers more than a place to sleep. It combines elegant design, generous living space and modern facilities in one of the most beautiful parts of Crete, and it suits families, couples and groups equally well.

Its position near Kolymvari puts the island's best beaches, villages and cultural sites within reach while keeping the peace and privacy of the countryside. Have a look at the gallery, or check your dates when you are ready.
